US smaller companies have been racing ahead

Janus US Venture fund

The managers of the $35m (£22.85m) Janus US Venture fund, Chad Meade and Brian Schaub, adopt a research-driven investment process which seeks out small cap stocks with differentiated business models and sustainable competitive advantages. While it is also a relatively small fund in terms of assets under management, returns have been good in the medium to long term. For three years, the fund posted a top-quartile return of 72.37 per cent.

Threadneedle American Smaller Companies fund

Co-managed by Cormac Weldon and Diane Sobin, this fund has produced consistent returns for its investors. Following the soft close of the Schroder US Smaller Companies fund managed by Jenny Jones, it wouldn’t be surprising if advisers opted for this as a very suitable alternative. It is ranked second behind the F&C Smaller Companies fund based on a five-year return of 84.4 per cent.
